Biomass Heating and Renewable Heat Incentive for Commercial Customers
In 2005, the Carbon Trust’s Biomass Sector Review brought to attention the potential of this energy source, revealing that biomass heating offers carbon savings of up to 20 million tonnes of CO2 per year in the UK. However, it’s not just the environment that benefits from biomass energy. Biomass can also have a hugely positive effect on businesses who choose to use it, helping them to reduce their individual carbon footprint and earn a large payback as part of the governments Renewable Heat Incentive.
It’s easy to see why so many businesses are choosing to switch to biomass energy. As a result, the biomass industry is growing fast in the UK. The government expects 12% of the country’s heating to come from a combination of biomass and other renewable sources by 2020.
Who Can Benefit From a Commercial Biomass Heating System?
Biomass boilers are ideal for commercial clients looking to save money and reduce their carbon emissions through their energy use.
Whether you’re a large commercial or industrial company, a public sector organisation or a small business, biomass boilers can be connected to virtually any existing heating system.
How to Make Money with a Biomass Boiler
One of the biggest benefits of biomass heating and other types of renewable energy is the Renewable Heat Incentive. As part of the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), commercial customers who generate heat using biomass will receive an on-going financial reward. This government run environmental programme is designed to encourage the use of renewable energy sources in the UK.
The RHI is open to renewable heat generators in the non-domestic sector including industrial, commercial, public sector and not-for-profit organisations, large or small. To receive payments, your boiler must meet certain eligibility requirements and must have been installed on or after 15th July 2009 in England, Scotland or Wales. Those with eligible installations are provided with a subsidy which is payable for 20 years. Payments are made for every kilowatt of heat generated by your biomass boiler.
The Renewable Heat Incentive provides a significant financial return on your investment that’s generally between 20 and 40%. It will also help businesses and organisations to offset the costs of installing biomass heating technologies.
Biomass Boilers for Commercial Use
Biomass boilers come in many shapes and sizes but commercial applications usually require a medium to large scale automatically fed system.
Burning wood fuel is one of the oldest ways to create heat, but the technology in a biomass boiler has been designed to hugely increase efficiency compared to traditional wood burning. Most boilers can convert up to 85 to 90% of the fuel into heat.
Integrated with automatic ignition and thermostat controls, biomass boilers are convenient and easy to use. While logs need to be manually loaded into a boiler, most commercial systems use small wood chips and pellets which are automatically fed from a storage area or hopper into the furnace using a feed system. Many hoppers are big enough to store up to a year’s worth of fuel at a time. Once your boiler is installed, all you have to do is ensure there’s a supply of fuel and periodically remove any ash deposits.
